Hubble is 20

Posted in Photography on May 2, 2010 by strikethreeuk

Yes, yes I know. I’ve been super-lazy recently. Here are some great photos from NASA in celebration of the Hubble Telescope’s 20th birthday. Enjoy!

I’ve been a bit more active on Twitter recently, so if you’re really missing me then check out my ramblings here.

Crack & Shine

Posted in Photography, Typography on September 21, 2009 by strikethreeuk

Got this through the letterbox a couple of days ago . . .

“Graffiti is perpetually and increasingly a controversial subject dividing opinion and rousing powerful debate, yet almost nothing is known about the true motivations and inspirations of the artists themselves. Crack & Shine offers exclusive insight into this thriving contemporary sub-culture, gaining access to the personal stories of some of the most secretive, enigmatic and creative individuals to lurk in London’s shadows.

Featuring forty of the most exciting and prolific graffiti artists to have lived and painted in London, Crack & Shine is the only London graffiti book ever to be published. Also presenting the work of London-based photographer Will Robson-Scott, Crack & Shine includes a series of over 50 beautifully-composed photographs, created exclusively for the book; giving articulate and vivid insight into the awkward moments of waiting, the apprehension of hiding and the calm and stillness that comes with seeing the world from an altered perspective.”

A great little book if you’re interested in the history of London graffiti. As far as I know, this is the best publication for this sort of thing (see also the old Bomb Alert magazines which pop on Ebay from time to time). It features some of the oldest and most infamous writers such as Cos/Cosa, Teach and Fume DDS, Zomby FBS, ATG, and TPG as well as old schoolers like Drax and Elk. Interesting and quite enlightening stuff. Click the picture for more.

Street Art in Reykjavík.

Posted in Art, Illustration, Photography, Strike Three on April 12, 2009 by strikethreeuk

Some interesting things I saw last week whilst roaming the streets of Reykjavík . . . Some of the pictures aren’t done justice by the resolution, but hey; don’t hate the player, hate the game. If anyone wants any of the flicks in hi-res, feel free to mail me. Before you say anything, there was quite a lot of graffiti, but not much of it impressed me enough to stop. There was one huge spot near the seafront with a building totally covered up to about 40 foot in the air . . but i missed it! I’m sure it’s on the net somewhere.

Hey, look at that, I have a gallery function (looks a bit cack really though doesn’t it . . .?).

The etched photos in the third picture are by an Icelandic photographer named Johannes Kjartansson. Check out his site here. Those particular photos are under the section named ‘Sirkusar/Sirkus Years’. Lovely.

EDIT: A quick and friendly email reply from Mr. Kjartansson revealed that the photos on the wall were taken inside the popular Sirkus bar, which used to be inside the red house. Unfortunately, it was knocked down to build a shopping centre, which is now unlikely be built! Mystery solved.

Li Jiejun

Interesting photography from Li Jijun. He uses toys and models to pose for his portraits, which apparently is a fad in the Far East. Rather strange, yet charming. Couln’t find out much about him but there are some more visuals here.
